Artist Statement:
At the heart of it, my art is an expression of my feelings on paper. Printmaking is like talking, or shouting or sighing. When I start a new print the only real planning I do is my palette, once I put ink to paper I let the lines inform my image and it springs from there.
My subjects are typically horses, crows or figures. I draw what I know well and what I love. When I start to draw, I am completely absorbed in the ink and as the form reveal itself, I feel that I become the creature I am creating.
Throughout my career as an artist I have worked in many mediums including; bronze sculpture, digital graphics, drawing with pastel or charcoal and now printmaking. What I find most satisfying about monotypes is the freedom and spontaneity it brings. Monotypes are a blend of painting and drawing and while the medium follows a structured process, the final outcome of the work is ultimately beyond your control. What can I say? I like surprises! The Monotype speaks to me because I am tasked with short bursts of creative inspiration followed by an exploration of the unknown. Monotypes happen only once but the inspiration emerges again and again in a multitude of forms.
